To transform the world, you, of course, need to know how to do so. For Indonesian students interested in pursuing biochemistry, the availability of specialized programs varies by country. In Indonesia, for instance, biochemistry is considered a rare academic discipline, with only a few universities offering dedicated programs. To date, only two institutions – Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) – provide formal biochemistry programs.

Given these limited options, many Indonesian students explore opportunities to study biochemistry abroad. Among these countries, is Malaysia, which has become a popular destination for Indonesian students due to its proximity, cultural similarities, and the widespread use of English in higher education. Several Malaysian universities offer biochemistry programs that cater to international students, including:

Ranking first in Malaysia, it’s no wonder UM also ranks first in Biochemistry (according to EduRank 2024). This university offers a program that emphasizes molecular biology, clinical biochemistry, and biochemical toxicology, preparing students for careers in pharmaceutical, research, and biotechnology. UM has a strong record of producing competent graduates and is recognized as one of the best undergraduate programs in Malaysia. It also provides a comprehensive curriculum that integrates practical and theoretical knowledge. However, this made the admission process very competitive.

  1. National University of Malaysia (UKM)

Locally known as Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, offers a curriculum focused on the biochemical processes that underlie life sciences. The university prepares graduates for roles in healthcare, industry, and academia. It emphasizes a strong theoretical foundation complemented by practical application and is well-regarded for its research initiatives and contributions to the scientific community.

  1. Tunku Abdul Rahman University (UTAR)

UTAR offers a comprehensive program to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the chemical process with living organisms while emphasizing theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills, preparing their graduates for diverse careers in science and industry. 

While dedicated biochemistry programs are limited in Malaysia, many universities incorporate biochemistry courses within broader fields of study. For example, the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) includes Human Biochemistry as a component of its Biomedical Science program. At the same time, the University of Technology Malaysia (UTM) offers Cellular Biochemistry & Metabolism and Applied Microbial Biochemistry & Biotransformation within its biology-focused science programs.

Listing all these universities, where will you end up eventually? If you think studying biochemistry means spending your entire career in a laboratory, think again. The field opens doors to a wide range of career opportunities beyond the lab, including forensic scientists, chemical engineers, toxicologists, molecular biologists, and clinical biochemists. If you’re more interested in medicine or pharmaceuticals, you can also pursue careers as a pharmacist or physician with additional specialized education.

Yes, biochemists do end up working in labs, but not in the stereotypical dusty, dimly lit spaces! Instead, they work in dynamic research environments, making groundbreaking discoveries that shape the future of science and medicine. Plus, with impressive – and undeniably fancy – job titles like ‘molecular biologist’ and ‘toxicologist,’ the field certainly carries a sense of prestige!
